Clothes are made from fabric.Fabrics have changed considerably since the 1950s and 60s with the advent of man made fibres.Fabric is made from yarn or thread by weaving or knitting. Knitting is the process of making lots of interlocking loops to create a piece of quite stretchy fabric, weaving is the crisscrossing of many threads into a relatively stronger piece of fabric and this requires a loom. The weave pattern leaves lots of long stretches on top of the weave, for example under over over over under over over over etc, this gives a smoother feel and the length of the over threads gives the gleam.

These give garments their different qualities, how well they fit and hang, and their performance too for sports clothes. The simplest weave is the plain weave where the filing thread just goes over under over under each of the warp threads to create the fabric. This gives a diagonal pattern to the fabric. Another weave is the twill weave, this would weave under under under over, under under under over for one row, then on the next move over a thread so under under over, under under under over etc.

The qualities of fabric, such as stretchiness, strength, crimp/kink, absorbency, smoothness and resilience are all as a result of the fibres/ filaments and the weave or knit. Up until then the only fibres available to make fabric from were wool, cotton, silk and flax linen. Satin is a type of weave that can be made from many fibres including cotton, silk or polyester. Here is some information about the basic structures of fabric, how they are constructed and the commonly used types available today. Filaments need to be spun together also as on their own they do not have much width &ndashdiameter, and need to be twisted together. Fabric is made from either fibres or filaments, these are the little wisps of Bamboo Yarn Suppliers cotton and strands of polyester that are spun together in order to create thread.

Longer fibres give a better quality thread and resulting fabric. In a loom rows of vertically held thread warp threads are pulled tight so that another thread filling thread can be woven in between them. Shorter fibres are spun into fuzzy thread and yarn because there are so many ends to stick out and resulting fabric seems rougher and bulkier. Man-made fibres have allowed to fashion and clothing styles to become what they are today. The length and width of fibres and filaments is very important in determining the characteristics of the piece of fabric they make. The difference between fibres and filaments is their length, cotton fibres are usually very short whereas filaments are very long - Silk is the only naturally occurring filament.
